David Mason in Independance Pass, Colorado

To escape the heat of Boulder we took a two day trip to Independance Pass. The main objective was to climb in the Ice Caves, sadly just after we arrived a big storm rolled in and destroyed all chances of this. We retreated to the shelter of Gollum’s Cave to try Choke Hold, a burly roof climb revolving around a perfect white granite tufa pinch.

The following morning and the warm winds and humidity returned. An early start allowed us to climb for a few hours before the rain commenced again. We warmed up and tried an amazing project that we might have managed if it had been 20 degrees cooler, much skin lost we hopped on a V9 that felt V11 in the heat! After giving up and starting again I managed to whale myself onto the sloping top of this outstanding granite boulder.
